Icon of Mother of God of Kazan to be returned to Orthodox Church, says Pope Rome, 23 (NE - eclesiales.org) Pope John Paul II recalled yesterday that he will soon return the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan to the Orthodox church, during his brief address to pilgrims before Sunday's Angelus prayer. The Holy Father explained that an icon of the Mother of God of Kazan image, which left Russia sometime in the 1920s, "after a prolonged stay in different places, reached the apartment of the pope some years ago." He confirmed that a “special delegation” will return the icon to the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and announced that next Wednesday, during the general audience in the Vatican , he will pray before the icon. “From this moment," the Pope said, "we entrust to Mary, mother of unity and of love, all of our prayers for the good of the church and of the entire human family." Progress is not and absolute value, warns Pope John Paul II Rome, 23 (NE - eclesiales.org) Progress is not an absolute value, stressed Pope John Paul II, in a message to Bishop Mariaano de Nicolo of Rimini, on occasion of a meeting held in that city by the members of Communion and Liberation. The Holy Father, in his message, stated that in today's society “the temptation to think that man's work finds in itself the justification of its own aims is particularly strong”. Anything that is today technically possible, he explained, is thought as “ethically good”. In his words, the Pontiff warned that from such a point of view, “progress becomes an absolute value, even the source of any value. Truth and justice would not be superior criteria for judgment”. He also warned about the consequences of considering “truth and justice as something that can be shaped” by men, and pointed out as an example recent experiments involving human cloning.
