Pope
John Paul II says that Christian spirituality does not involve an effort towards
«self-perfection» nor a lack of commitment in history
Vatican
City, 23 (NE) In this week’s General Audience, Pope John Paul II said to Catholics
throughout the world «that Christian spirituality does not involve an effort
towards “self-perfection”, as if a person with their own strength could promote
the integral growth of their being and obtain salvation». «Nor does Christian
spirituality consist of becoming almost “immaterial”, incorporeal, deprived
of a responsible commitment in history», added the Holy Father.
During his weekly catechesis on Wednesday, Pope John Paul talked to the pilgrims
in Saint Peter’s Square about «Life in the Spirit». The Holy Father underlined
that «in the history of salvation, life always appears associated with the Spirit
of God». «The Holy Spirit -he continued- manifests his life-giving power especially
in the life of Jesus», by vitalizing and guiding his mission of salvation. «The
Holy Spirit, like the Father and Son, is the protagonist of the “Gospel of Life”
which the Church never tires of proclaiming and giving witness to in the world».
Cardinal Ruini underlines importance of overcoming breach between faith and culture
Rome,
23 (NE) In a speech recently delivered in the «Studio teologico accademico bolognese»,
Cardinal Camilo Ruini, President of the Italian Bishops Conference, underlined
the importance of overcoming the breach between faith and culture.
During his speech, Cardinal Ruini said that theology had to endeavor in order
to show that faith is rational and relevant in relation to all dimensions of
the human person. Theology must have a function supporting intelligence, he
said in another moment of his speech, «seeking to defend its value and capacity»
for all human beings.
Recalling the Holy Father’s last encyclical, «Fides et ratio», he said that
it indicates the necessity of reason in faith, «so that faith itself is not
reduced to feelings and subjective experiences». «Faith must be proposed to
everyone», said the President of the Italian Bishops Conference, stating that
this was the «big change» requested to theology, so that «the breach between
life and culture and between Gospel and life» might be ended.

«Church
news» has a new home on the Internet
As from today, as an explicit act of solidarity
with the Holy Father on occasion of the 20th anniversary of the solemn inauguration
of his Petrine ministry, Church News (Noticias Eclesiales) has a new home on
the Internet (http://www.eclesiales.org).
From this day we will be offering news from the Church in three languages: English,
Portuguese and Spanish.
For more than two years Noticias Eclesiales has been offering its service to the Church as a guest in the web site of the Christian Life Movement. It is not exactly a news agency. Rather, it is an electronic bulletin with news of and about the People of God around the world. Its origin goes back to a group of members of the Sodalite Family, interested in communicating with other members of the Movement. It slowly gained regularity, and the continuously increasing number of readers brought new reporters from the different countries in which members of the CLM live.
Today, joining to the joy of the Church as it commemorates the solemn inauguration of the Holy Father’s pontificate, Church News takes this important step. It is not exactly a news agency, although it’s something like that. Rather, it is a bulleting with news of and about the People of God. With our prayers for the Holy Father and our desire to serve the Church, Church News appears as from today, 22nd of October, in three languages.
Pope John Paul celebrated 20th anniversary of his pontificate
Vatican, 19 (NE) With Saint Peter´s Square filled
with pilgrims from many different places of the world, Pope John Paul II celebrated
yesterday the 20th anniversary of his pontificate and the 40th anniversary marking
his episcopal ordination. During his homily, the Vicar of Christ recalled the
moments of his election, which he accepted «in the obedience of faith before
Christ, my Lord, with absolute trust in the Mother of Christ and of the Church»,
as he shared yesterday.
During the Mass, Pope John Paul thanked the prayers and the many expressions
of solidarity shown to him on that special anniversary. «This day I have felt
the heart of the Church beat next to me», said the Pontiff. «Dear brothers and
sisters, this is the meaning of our gathering in prayer in Saint Peter´s Square:
give thanks to God for His providing solicitude with which He continuously guides
and sustains his people in the path of history». Almost at the end of his homily,
the Holy Father asked all catholics throughout the world to pray «for this Pope»,
so that he may fulfill his mission in the service of the Church. «I renew with
all my heart -said the Holy Father- the consecration of my life and my ministry
to Mary, Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Church. To Her I repeat with
filial abandon: Totus Tuus!».
